The islands of the archipelago are the best underwater place in the world for sightings of large marine life. She has already seen it all- abundant marine life, and even calls the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revillagigedo Islands &#8220;biological freaks&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Giant Mantas<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PExbLMfYBh8\" width=\"100%\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Of course the main attraction of this archipelago are the <strong>giant mantas<\/strong> also called &#8220;the giant friends&#8221; because in addition to their size they interact with divers at close range. And what&#8217;s more, they are the world&#8217;s friendliest giant manta rays.<\/p>\n<p>The giant Pacific manta rays (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mantatrust.org\/mobula-birostris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Mobula Birostris<\/em><\/a>) that can be encountered at Socorro Island are the largest of their group. They fly at the Revillagigedo Archipelago by moving their wing-like pectoral fins, which can measure up to 9 meters wide, or an average of 6 meters. In Socorro, these giants interact with divers, and can come as close as a meter away from divers!<\/p>\n<p><strong>In particular, they truly enjoy hovering above divers\u2026 Any ideas why? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; They like feeling the bubbles in their bellies!<\/p>\n<p>But Giant Mantas are not only there for the tickles, the Archipelago is also known for its \u201ccleaning stations&#8221;. Giant Mantas and other animals circle these cleaning stations to get their skin and gills cleaned by the beautiful and endemic Clarion Angelfish (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishbase.se\/summary\/11172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Holacanthus clarionensis<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Sharks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10725\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/shark-scientific-expedition.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/shark-scientific-expedition.jpg 1350w, https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/shark-scientific-expedition-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/shark-scientific-expedition-1024x463.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/shark-scientific-expedition-768x347.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Shark sightings are also very impressive since the Archipelago of Revillagigedo is home to 28 species of sharks!\u2026 that we know of. These 7 species are frequently spotted by divers, (in order of chance of seeing them):<\/p>\n<p>\ud83e\udd88 1. <strong>White Tip Reef Sharks <\/strong>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whitetip_reef_shark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Triaenodon obesus<\/a><\/em>): these smallish (1.30m max) sharks can be commonly found literally piled up in rock crevices and swimming around in big schools. They have a very keen eye and are night hunters, so during the day they snooze or swim around lazily. A fun fact is that they like to rest facing the current to facilitate their breathing.<br \/>\n\ud83e\udd88 2. <strong>Silver tip sharks <\/strong>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silvertip_shark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carcharhinus albimarginatus<\/a><\/em>): these are a personal favorite. Like their scientific name suggests, they have white \u201cmargins\u201d lining their fins and eyes. They also love spending time at the local \u201cspa\u201d or cleaning stations.<br \/>\n\ud83e\udd88 3. <strong>Galapagos sharks<\/strong> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/animal\/Galapagos-shark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carcharhinus galpagensis<\/a><\/em>): Galapagos sharks are impressive underwater. Bold and big (up to 3.7m) they calmly mill in groups around cleaning stations. Apparently, they know themselves to be gorgeous because they are great models for shark pictures.<br \/>\n\ud83e\udd88 4. <strong>Silky sharks<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinebio.org\/species\/silky-sharks\/carcharhinus-falciformis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Carcharhinus falciformis<\/em><\/a>): these oceanic sharks travel around in groups and can be seen in large numbers from to surface to around 15m or swimming around the boat on the surface at night.<br \/>\n\ud83e\udd88 5. <strong>Hammerhead sharks<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scalloped_hammerhead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Sphyrna lewini<\/em><\/a>): hammerhead sharks also enjoy the benefits of cleaning stations in Revillagigedo. Because they\u2019re a bit shyer they circle in huge schools just outside the cleaning stations and let the cleaner fish come to them. Research has shown that they have better social skills than previously thought, since they seem to have a hierarchical system. In the group, they segregate themselves by gender and age, just like a pack!<br \/>\n\ud83e\udd88 6. <strong>Whale sharks<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whale_shark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Rhyncodon typus<\/em><\/a>): whale sharks are usually seen during the months of April through June, November, and December. They enjoy the cleaning stations and the large quantities of food in the area.<br \/>\n\ud83e\udd88 7. <strong>Tiger sharks<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiger_shark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Galeocerdo cuvier<\/em><\/a>): these amazing giants can also be spotted in Revillagigedo. Easily spotted because of their striped body and huge size. Males can measure up to 4m and females up to 5.5m.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Fish<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11067\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/school-of-fish-socorro.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/school-of-fish-socorro.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/school-of-fish-socorro-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/school-of-fish-socorro-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/school-of-fish-socorro-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Due to Revillagigedo\u2019s geographical location between two ecoregions and currents, the Archipelago has one of the highest numbers of fish species in Mexico, it is <strong>home to 251 species of fish<\/strong>. Because of the distance from the mainland, Revillagigedo hosts an array of pelagic fish. In all dive sites, it is possible to see:<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc1flarge schools of <strong>Jacks<\/strong> (many different species),<br \/>\n\ud83d\udc1f<strong>barracuda<\/strong>,<br \/>\n\ud83d\udc1f<strong>wahoo<\/strong>,<br \/>\n\ud83d\udc1f<strong>marlin<\/strong>,<br \/>\n\ud83d\udc1fand even<strong> Yellowfin tuna<\/strong> actively hunting!<\/p>\n<p>Another icon of Revilla is the <strong>Clarion Angelfish<\/strong>. This endemic fish can only be found in Revillagigedo. Their job is to run the \u201cspas\u201d in the area, they can often be seen cleaning larger animals\u2019 skin, teeth, and gills. Small as they may be, they are the reason why we can see so many animals in the same dive spot in the area. <strong>The Clarion Angelfish is only one of 16 endemic species in the Archipelago.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Marine Mammals<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11065\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pod-of-dolphins-socorro.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pod-of-dolphins-socorro.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pod-of-dolphins-socorro-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pod-of-dolphins-socorro-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kooxdiving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pod-of-dolphins-socorro-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Archipelago of Revi. is also an important feeding and reproductive area for <strong>18 species of marine mammals.<\/strong> During the dives, it\u2019s common to see <strong>bottlenose dolphins<\/strong> (<em>Tursiops truncatus<\/em>). Playful and curious, they love coming to play with the divers and can often be seen with their offspring.<\/p>\n<p>During the months of January through April, <strong>humpback whales<\/strong> (<em>Megaptera novaengliae<\/em>) use the area as breeding and birthing grounds. They can be spotted from the boat and for some lucky people, even while diving.
