Bull Sharks, also known as Zambezi Sharks, Nicaragua Sharks, Ganges River Sharks, Shovelnose sharks etc are remarkable animals. Commonly found in coastal areas of warm oceans, they have a special ability. Bull sharks easily switch between salt and freshwaters. Thus, they can be found in rivers and even lakes. What is more, they give birth in the fresh waters of rivers and also in the warm waters of the Caribbean reefs around Playa del Carmen.

Bull sharks get their name from their stocky figure and the broad, flat snout, resembling a bull. And just like bulls, they have a habit to attack the prey, hitting it first in the butt using the head, the so-called “bump-and-bite technique”. When attacked, bull sharks use a special trick, they throw up, the predator gets distracted and the bull shark gets a chance to escape.

Bull sharks are quite large predators. Their weight can reach up to 130 kg and length of 2.4m.

Their menu consists mostly of different kind of fish, smaller sharks, stingrays, dolphins, turtles, starfish, birds and even land mammals. They hunt in murky waters, where it is harder for the pray to see its predator.
